Century alleys, "ear of desires", thuja for the quest. Park "Gorni" in the project "Grodno region: reserved world"

Long-lived maple, oak and linden from one root

You can get acquainted with the wonders of the flora, visit the museum of forestry history and the only ecological center in the region, visit bees and the thuja labyrinth, walk along one of the ecological routes - all this can be done in the Gorni park on the outskirts of Lida - a botanical natural monument of the local values.

Long-lived maple, oak and linden from one root

The history of the Gorny park, which was founded on the initiative of the tsar State Forestry Protection on the southern outskirts of Lida, begins in the distant 1881. In December 1964, by the decision of the Lida regional executive committee, the park was declared a botanical natural monument of local importance. The area of the park is 6.7 hectares. There are more than two thousand trees and shrubs belonging to 41 species. More than one and a half thousand trees, including rare species, have crossed the century, another 226 trees are old-growth (80-100 years old).

-The botanical natural monument of local significance, the Gorni park, on the lands of our forestry enterprise, is a unique object that is of dendrological value, has scientific, historical and environmental and educational significance, says Cheslav Borko, deputy director of the Lida forestry enterprise.

The park is popular among residents of Lida and town guests. In addition to the pristine natural beauty, there is a lot of fascinating and educational things. The largest and oldest tree in the park is the sugar maple, it is 139 years old, the trunk diameter is 180 centimeters! Alleys built over 130 years ago have been preserved. There are plantations of Siberian larch, Weymouth and Scots pine, white acacia, linden ... There are also pedunculate oak, common ash, robinia pseudoacacia, prickly spruce.

Everywhere there are signs with the names of the tree species and the place of its distribution.

The guide will tell you that the one-color fir was planted by the former forester of the Lida forestry Vladimir Roman in the 80s of the last century. And the red oak, whose homeland is North America, is listed in the ... "Black Book" of the flora of Belarus and is an invasive species that can harm the environment. On the alley of Siberian larch, you will not only admire the mighty trees, but also learn that its wood is superior in quality to all other conifers, is little subject to decay, is very hard and heavy, therefore ... it sinks in water.

Between the green giants is the Fairy Tales Alley, where you can meet and take pictures with fairy-tale characters: Baba Yaga, Rusalka, Leshim. And on one of the trees there is an "ear of desires"! Everyone can whisper their deepest desire there, and it will certainly come true. But the desire must be real, not fantastic.

On one of the most majestic avenues in the park - linden - there is a linden and an oak tree that grow from almost the same root. This is a unique place for newlyweds' photo sessions.

A stylish octagonal wedding pavilion rises in a huge meadow, and from it "rays" - paths made of paving slabs - radiate from it in different directions. In April 2019, five newlywed couples in a solemn atmosphere registered their marriage here and in memory of this event laid a wedding alley of young lindens. The place has become popular with those who enter into family life. Each couple can plant their own family tree in the unique park.

And the birch alley of Glory, Memory and Hope, which was laid by graduates of higher educational institutions of forestry, leads to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In 1967, near the surrounding villages, the remains of five soldiers of the Soviet Army who died during the Great Patriotic War were discovered and reburied in a mass grave in the park.

 In the woody maze

A favorite place for children, of course, is the playground of the park. The kids frolic on a wooden slide, like a hut on chicken legs, ride a swing, relax on comfortable benches, and admire the plants. And in the game they study the natural environment.

The zest of the park can rightfully be called a green maze of thuja. Now the hedge is no higher than a meter in height, but after five years even an adult can get lost among hundreds of emeralds. The quest in the maze is a fascinating pastime. This labyrinth measuring 25x37 meters was laid in the fall of 2017 by the project of the staff of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences. Consists of 1415 pieces of thuja smaragd from the basic forest nursery of the Smorgon experimental forestry enterprise. The labyrinth is very popular with children and adults alike.

Learn to love the forest and visit the bees

The heart of the old park is an ecological educational center, created three years ago by the public association "Belarusian Botanical Society" in partnership with the Lida forestry enterprise and the V.F. Kuprevich National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on a large-scale project of the UN Development Program "Assistance in the transition of the Republic of Belarus to a green economy." The center includes a museum of forestry in Grodno region, an ecological class for schoolchildren, a house “Visiting the Bees” on the territory of an apiary.

The ecological class in the historic building of the Lida forestry built in 1937 is equipped with the latest technology. It has become a modern educational platform for schoolchildren to study flora and fauna. With great interest, children and adults visit the forestry museum, which was opened in the building of the cone dryer, which was once considered one of the best in the republic. In the museum, in addition to the presentation of the process of drying cones and obtaining seeds, there is an exposition of the form of foresters of past years, as well as information about the history of the Lida and all forestry enterprises of the Grodno region, the Grodno state production forestry association, as well as protected plants and animals of Lidchina, forest dwellers.

An interesting stand of unique plantations and trees in Lidchina is a project of the Institute of Experimental Botany in cooperation with "Lidskaya Gazeta". Schoolchildren stay for a long time at the interactive stands “Learn the tracks of animals” and “Learn the kind of wood”, where you can test your knowledge. And they enjoy watching nature conservation films in the cinema hall equipped with multimedia devices.

“This is an excellent form of education for young people,” emphasizes Cheslav Borko. - The center is designed to help the new generation fall in love with the forest, nature, preserve the unique arboretum, as well as create conditions for the development of ecotourism and teach sustainable forest use and forest management.

For the eco-center in the park, hiking, water and cycling ecological trails have been developed. And in the house "Visiting the Bees" the beekeeper talks about all the intricacies of collecting honey, the arrangement of the beehive and the family hierarchy of the bee family, and also treats them with honey and herbal tea. Children watch the life of a bee family "online" in a glass hive, see how an old and modern honey extractor goes by, and get to know hardworking insects better. There is also a solid hunting complex of the Lida forestry enterprise in the Gorni park, designed by the Lida architects, sisters Zhanna and Galina Khilgora.

Having once visited the park, you want to come back here again and again: wander along the centuries-old alleys, breathe, learn and admire.
